A NEW FRONTIER
Digital visual effects are now an established part of the cinematic experience, but the world of Theatre is only just beginning to exploit the potential of virtual sets and projected digital effects. Incorporating these into live performances is a fascinating and exciting new frontier. Some see it as a tool to support and enhance storytelling, others as a way to tempt modern audiences away from TV and films and into the Theatre.

Although the possibilities for virtual sets are endless, there are very few visual effects companies offering their skills and experience to such a newly emerging field - particularly as budgets are usually very tight!

THE DAWNING OF A NEW ERA
DIGITALmotion is very passionate about the use of digital effects in the Theatre, which can enhance the narrative and offer new possibilities to creative Directors. From subtle background animations, such as birds flying across a backdrop, to set extensions, natural disasters, and even the integration of pre-filmed actors against blue-screens, interacting with the live action on stage. This is a unique and exciting developmental process for the stage and a number of new plays have even been specifically written with virtual capabilities in mind.

CASE STUDY: The Ghost Downstairs
For a touring production of ‘The Ghost Downstairs’ we worked with the Director to break new ground and include digitally projected effects, which blended seamlessly with the live action and sets. After filming and adding visual effects to a number of scenes, we created a customised DVD which would project them into exactly the right areas, on cue. In order to maintain the illusion for the audience we used audio cues for the menu options rather than visible ones.
